KL&A MASS TIMBER

LEADING THE MASS TIMBER MOVEMENT
KL&A has been shaping mass timber in the Rocky Mountain region since its earliest adoption—delivering many of the projects that helped define the market. From Denver’s first CLT office building to multi-story residential and mixed-use developments, our work has helped move timber from concept to proven solution.
What sets KL&A apart is our history of integrated project work that informs our collaborative approach to mass timber. Our engineers, detailers, and builders collaborate with external partners to align design, fabrication, and erection from the start. In mass timber, where precision and coordination drive success, that approach leads to systems that are efficient, constructible, and competitive with other structural systems.
KL&A's Team Mass Timber truly cares about the outcome of these mass timber projects, serving as Engineer of Record, Delegated Design, or as a resource to clients to steer their projects towards being built - even if we're not involved on the project.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

KL&A doesn’t just work with mass timber—we help move it forward. Our team played a key role in advancing building code changes in Denver to allow tall mass timber construction, helping remove barriers to high-rise timber buildings in the region. That work enabled new possibilities for architects, developers, and builders.
Internally, we continue to push timber systems through hands-on development—refining connection strategies, improving coordination between trades, developing local material sourcing, and optimizing how timber integrates with steel and concrete in hybrid systems. Because our team spans engineering, detailing, and construction, these ideas are tested against real-world constraints—not just theory.
The result is smarter systems, fewer surprises, and projects that perform as intended.

OUTREACH & EDUCATION
Advancing mass timber also means sharing what we’ve learned.

KL&A regularly speaks at industry events, universities, and workshops—helping teams better understand how to design and deliver successful timber buildings. Our focus is practical: what works, what doesn’t, and how to avoid common pitfalls.

We also offer AIA-accredited presentations tailored to architects, owners, and builders—grounded in real project experience and delivered in a way that teams can immediately apply.
